Funding Priorities

The Iowa Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®—along with those who generously support us with their talent, time and resources—is working to better the lives of those facing breast cancer in our community. We join more than 100,000 breast cancer survivors and activists around the globe as part of the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network fighting breast cancer. Through events like the Komen Iowa Race for the Cure, we have invested over $700,000 in 2011 in local breast health and breast cancer awareness projects in 81 of Iowa’s 99 counties. The Iowa Affiliate also funded more than $3.5 million within our service area over the past five years.  Up to 75 percent of net proceeds generated by the Komen Iowa Affiliate stay in our service area. The remaining funds go to the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grants Program for energizing science to find the cures.

The Komen Iowa Affiliate is currently offering grants for the 2012-2013 grant cycle (April 1, 2012-March 31, 2013) for innovative programs that reduce breast cancer mortality, especially among those who are disproportionately affected by this disease.  Through our own assessment and community needs, we have identified the following funding priority areas:

      1. Improve access to breast health services for all women in Iowa
      2. Strengthen and build partnerships that will increase overall community impact
      3. Enhance education and awareness of disease prevention, breast health and breast cancer in order to move at-risk populations to action
      4. Increase breast health education or services provided in target counties including: Polk, Decatur, and Ringgold counties
      5. Special consideration will be given to progams addressing areas within the continuum of care including diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care
